I know a game that we played here at Carolina called 5 v 5 mark your own man. It was one of the best games ever. Rules were that you could only take the ball from the person you were marking. So it would teach you to take people on and not so much as worry about what would happen if you lost the ball. This is an area that really needs work in the american environment. We lack a 1 v. 1 dual artist. Someone who wants the ball at the most important times willing to put the weight of the team on their shoulders.
Using small-sides like this is one of the best environments for anyone to learn in and you can always tell who understands the game because there is nowhere to hide in small numbers.
