One way to develop goalie judgment is to use drills that integrate the goalie with the field players. For example: set out a square with cones, a goal is placed 10-15 yards from one side; two teams of field
players (the number per team can vary, but three or four works well) in the square pass to teammates, the other teams tries to take possession; once a team has completed three consecutive passes a shot can be made on goal; the goalkeeper must follow the action and be ready for the shot when (and from where) it comes. The drill can be modified to allow a player to breakaway after the third consecutive pass, players
to follow their shot, etc.
I believe this type of drill is not only more realistic than goalie-only drills, but it also allows a coach to observe a greater variety of skills being used, as well as the judgment of when to use them.
